Mass Shooting at Funeral Home in Chicago Sends 15 Victims to Hospitals

On early Wednesday, Chicago police went searching for suspects who fled in various directions after a mass shooting outside a city funeral home.

According to a report by Chicago Sun-Times, fifteen people were shot on Tuesday evening outside a funeral home in Gresham on the South Side. The shooting occurred at around 6:30 p.m., as people started leaving a funeral.

Victims in Serious to Critical Condition

Chicago Police First Deputy Supt. Eric Carter said five area hospitals treated the 15 victims. Their conditions range from serious to critical. Also, their ages range from 21 to 65 years old. Police couldn’t say yet whether the shootings involved gangs.

Fox News also reported that the gunfire “drew new criticism for the city's leaders, who have pushed back against President Trump‘s call for federal intervention into big-city lawlessness.”

“All we saw was just bodies laying everywhere,” said witness Arnita Gerder to WMAQ-TV in Chicago. “Shot up everywhere, all over. Legs, stomach, back, all over the place. We thought it was a war out here,” she also stated.

According to Carter, a black vehicle was speeding west on 79th Street when people inside began “firing at attendees of a funeral.” Some people at the funeral returned gunfire with those in the vehicle.

Police were interviewing a person of interest, but no arrests have been made.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot called the shooting “another senseless tragedy.”

“Far too many have suffered,” he also said. “Far too many have attended funerals and tried to start the process of healing entire communities following another senseless tragedy. When a person picks up a gun, we suffer as a city. This cannot be who we are,” Lightfoot then wrote. “We cannot give shelter to killers. People know who are responsible.”
