McConnell Will Shut Down Biden Supreme Court Nominee in 2024 If GOP Controls Senate

On Monday, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said he plans on blocking a Biden administration Supreme Court nominee in 2024 if the Republicans reclaim Senate majority by then.

During an interview with radio host Hugh Hewitt, McConnell said he would block a Biden Supreme Court nominee. This comes following the senator’s controversial decision last year. He plowed ahead to confirm Justice Amy Coney Barrett under two weeks prior to Election Day.

In the interview, McConnell said that, in the midst of a presidential election, if the Senate majority is of the opposite party as the president, one would have a hard time finding the last time a Supreme Court vacancy was filled.

Given that scenario, he thinks it’s unlikely for a Supreme Court nominee to be confirmed during election season. However, he did explain why 2020 was different. In 2020, the party controls both the Senate and White House.

McConnell acknowledged this. However, Democrats accused members of the GOP of hypocrisy. The latter party confirmed a Supreme Court justice in 2020, an election year. This comes after they refused to do so in 2016.
