New Jersey Adopts New Law Mandating Gay and Transgender Curriculum

A gay and transgender-focused curriculum is going to be adopted by a dozen New Jersey schools. The curriculum will soon be implemented statewide in the fall.

According to Washington Examiner, twelve pilot schools “will be testing grounds for lessons in history, economics, and grammar with lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender contributions.”

According to the law, middle and high school students must be taught about the contributions of the gay and transgender community throughout history. The law has given local districts the freedom on how to most effectively relay the message.

New Jersey is the second state to adopt this law, following California which adopted a similar law in 2011. There have been mixed reactions about this program.

More than 3,500 signatures have been gathered by the Family Policy Alliance of New Jersey supporting the belief that the state is “forcing sexual ideology” on children. The petition appeals that parents must have the choice if they want their children out of the curriculum.

“This law violates the fundamental and constitutional rights of parents to direct the moral and educational upbringing of their children,” the petition states. “It was written with no protections for families — families cannot opt their child out of the content for any reason, not even if they have religious or moral objections!”

On the other hand, supporters have given positive reactions. A report by North Jersey says the supporters say, “it’s about respecting rights and teaching a full picture of history, and opponents, who say it will take away power from parents and may encourage kids to question their sexuality.”
