New MO Bills Aim to Expand Concealed Carry While Blocking Federal Gun Control Laws
Missouri legislators are considering several “Second Amendment sanctuary” bills. The said bills aim to protect the gun rights of residents from gun control laws that may be enacted on the federal level.
The Second Amendment Preservation Act is one such “sanctuary” bill. The state’s House of Representatives has already approved the bill. Also, as of Feb. 8, the bill has been sent to Missouri Senate. It aims to increase the state’s ability to govern itself without the federal government's control. This would then make federal gun control laws invalid if the state’s government sees that they violate the rights of people living in the state.
The said legislation would also ban local and state law enforcement from enacting federal laws that would violate a Missouri resident’s Second Amendment rights. Agencies who violate this rule could be held liable.
Additionally, policies about certain gun taxes, gun-owning and gun transfer bans, as well as mandatory gun registration would be rendered invalid if the measure passes.
House Bill 85, introduced by State Rep. Jered Taylor, also aims to remove the limitations of places where people with concealed carry permits can bring their guns. The representative also said property owners, not the government, should decide if they want their area to be gun-free.
Public college campuses, apart from specific areas, are not exempt from this rule.
Additionally, these legislations pass, local governments will not have the power to stopping employees with valid permits from carrying their firearms.
