No Charges to Be Pressed for Arrested “Late Show” Staffers
On Monday, Federal prosecutors revealed that they did not bring charges against staffers of CBS’ “Late Show with Stephen Colbert” who had been arrested in a U.S. Capitol complex Building last June.
The U.S. Attorney’s office in Washington made the decision, and it follows prosecutors determining that they “cannot move forward” with the misdemeanor charges against the nine individuals who were arrested on June 16 at the Longworth House Office Building. The incident happened during the third public hearing done by the House panel investigating the Capitol riot that happened on Jan. 6, 2021.
A U.S. attorney’s office spokesman stated that it was unlikely for a conviction to be obtained and sustained since the nine people had been invited and that their escort had not asked them to leave the building.
The Capitol Police refused to provide the names of the individuals arrested. However, a person familiar with the matter gave the Associated Press a list of nine persons whom the Capitol Police stopped. These included producers, along with Rob Smigel, a comedian and writer.
Capitol Police officials stated on Monday that they respect the U.S. attorney’s office’s decision.
