A missing Ohio cop was found dead outside a municipal building early Monday, minutes after the suspect's ex-girlfriend called to report that her ex was looking to kill an officer, according to local reports.

Knox County Sheriff's Office identified the fallen cop as Officer Thomas Cottrell.

Authorities said they tried to warn Cottrell after they received the 911 call — but they didn't reach him in time.

Troopers first found Cottrell's hat splattered with blood near his police car’s last known location, suggesting that the officer ran into trouble while responding to a call, WBNS-TV reported.

Cottrell's body was later found outside the Danville Municipal Building, according to the Plain Dealer.

His vehicle went missing from Danville, a village of about 1,000 residents 50 miles northeast of Columbus, and was recovered in a nearby wooded area.

A suspect identified as Herschel Jones III was captured two hours after the officer was first reported missing at midnight, according to WTTE Fox 28 in Central Ohio.

The apparent attack comes on the cusp of 2016’s first law enforcement fatality.A police officer was shot and killed Sunday morning while confronting an armed suspect near Salt Lake City, Utah.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
