Officer Who Shot Daunte Wright Resigned and Has Been Charged
Kimberly Potter, the Minneapolis police officer who unintentionally shot suspect Daunte Wright while he tried to escape arrest, will face charges of manslaughter.
According to the New York Times, Potter, who fatally shot Wright after seemingly making the mistake of pulling out her handgun instead of her taser, will face charges of second-degree manslaughter. This comes after three nights of protests following the killing. According to a Washington County prosecutor, the complaint would be filed on Wednesday.
Potter, 48, has served with the Minneapolis police force for around 26 years. She has also been training other officers when they pulled Wright’s car over last Sunday. They saw that the man had an expired car registration and that something was hanging from his rearview mirror. However, the police found out that Wright had an arrest warrant out for him. So, they tried to arrest him but he escaped back to his car.
Potter Resigns Following Daunte Wright Shooting
Several media outlets released untruthful claims that Wright only had a warrant of arrest for hanging air freshener in his car. In reality, he had an outstanding warrant for his failure to register a firearm, along with other serious crimes.
As per a Fox News report, based on court records, Wright also had an open warrant of arrest connected to a first-degree aggravated armed robbery charge.
Since the incident, Potter has already resigned. In her resignation letter, she expressed that she had “loved every minute” of serving in the police force. She also wrote that her resignation is “in the best interest” of her community, the police department and of fellow police officers.
