In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, gyms are rushing for outdoor real estates to hold workouts.

Several fitness studios and personal trainers begin to bring workouts outdoors to ensure social distancing and no contact with equipment.

Fox Business reported that Tone House, a New York City-based workout studio, has remained closed since March. However, the studio now plans to bring back outdoor workouts. Classes have a 20-person limit, and it will follow social distancing protocols. Pure Barre, a barre workout franchise, hosted a parking lot pop-up workout this month in Virginia.

According to personal trainers, more clients have been requesting socially distanced training sessions.

“I started to train my clients outside more since the virus [started],” said Oscar Smith, a celebrity trainer. “Workouts like yoga work great in a big park setting because you can really space everybody out. Bringing the workout outside also allows for better airflow.”

Gyms have been open indoors but with restrictions. However, doctors advise people to reassess after a recent outbreak at a big-box gym sent hundreds of people into quarantine.

Fox Business explains that “at least 200 members of a Planet Fitness in West Virginia were exposed to COVID-19 after a gym goer tested positive for the virus last week.”

“With the amount of community spread in Arizona, Texas, Florida and the fact that they’re enclosed, your risks for infection is just too high to be at a gym at this point,” said Dr. Matthew Heinz, a hospitalist and internist at Tucson Medical Center in Arizona.
