Police Discovers Stolen Checks and Absentee Ballot in Texas Man’s Vehicle

Authorities have charged a Houston man for stealing more than 100 pieces of mail, including an absentee ballot.

Daruin Anelby Rosario, 24, was scheduled to make his initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Christina A. Bryan on Monday at 2 p.m. U.S. Attorney Ryan K. Patrick announced Rosario’s arrest.

According to the Houston Chronicle, Rosario encountered a Humble police unit during a traffic stop late Thursday. Court documents say that “Rosario made multiple furtive movements and said that he noticed a strong scent of marijuana inside the car,” the paper reported.

A search of the vehicle led to a huge array of opened and unopened mail in a backpack and garbage bag. There were letters, checks, an absentee ballot, and a passport – all of which having other people’s names on it.

“Inside, law enforcement allegedly found a large quantity of unopened and opened mail in the names of others,” the attorney's office said.

Officials have forwarded the ballot to election authorities in Washington. If convicted, Rosario will face up to five years in federal prison and a possible $250,000 maximum fine.
