Police Officer Dies in Shooting; Two Other Officers Expected to Recover

On Sunday night, a police officer for the Phoenix Police Department died and two others were injured. This is after responding to a domestic violence call. Fox News reported that the two other officers are expected to recover.

The late officer has been identified as Greg Carnicle, a commander at the department who was close to retirement. According to a statement from the department, he served on the force for 31 years and has recently been the head of all evening and weekend patrol operations.

AZFamily reported that according to Phoenix police, on Sunday at around 7 p.m., several roommates at the home got into an argument. “The situation escalated and the roommates called police to remove one of the roommates who was acting strange and erratic. Carnicle and two of his officers were dispatched to the home,” said the report.

Moments later, the suspect opened fire on Carnicle and the two other officers.

On Monday morning, Sgt. Mercedes Fortune said the suspect was pronounced dead after being shot by officers.

Mayor Kate Gallego recently tweeted: “No words are adequate to express my sadness for Commander Carnicle’s family and @PhoenixPolice. After a decorated career spent keeping PHX safe, he had his choice of assignments. He volunteered to be a Night Commander—this is the truest sign of the integrity of his character.”

Mayor Gallego’s tweet was in response to a tweet by the Phoenix Police Department: “Critical Incident: With heavy hearts we announce the passing of a Phx PD Commander.  Greg Carnicle was shot at the scene of a domestic violence call. Two other officers also shot at 40th Drive and Pinnacle Peak. The two officers are expected to recover.  RIP Cmdr Carnicle.”

Cmdr. Carnicle is survived by his wife and four children.
