Archbishop: Pro-Abortion Democrats Shouldn’t Take Communion

San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone took a straight jab at pro-abortion Democrats. He argued that Catholics should not publicly push for something against the church. Otherwise, they may find themselves denied services such as Holy Communion.

Archbishop Warns Pro-Abortion Democrats

In a pastoral letter issued Saturday, the archbishop warned pro-abortion Democrats. “If you find that you are unwilling or unable to abandon your advocacy for abortion, you should not come forward to receive Holy Communion,” said Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone in a pastoral letter released Saturday.

In fairness, the letter didn’t mention the politicians by name. However, both Biden and Pelosi recently pushed for expanded abortion access.

At the same time, they claimed to remain devout Catholics. This is a contradiction, according to both catechism and Cordileone's statement.

Anti-Abortion Stance

The Catholic Church holds that sinning members should not receive Holy Communion. However, they can do so again after getting absolution through confession.

In his letter, Cordileone argues that by participating in “moral evil,” public figures who support abortion may need to refrain from Holy Communion. “Because we are dealing with public figures and public examples of cooperation in moral evil, this correction can also take the public form of exclusion from the reception of Holy Communion,” he said.

In fact, Cordileone said that Catholics have long exercised this discipline.  He said that sometimes, the pastor only has the remedy of denying sinners from the Lord’s Table.

The archbishop noted that the practice is “bitter medicine, but the gravity of the evil of abortion” can warrant their exclusion. As a result, he called on abortion supporters to “[P]lease stop pretending that advocating for or practicing a grave moral evil—one that snuffs out an innocent human life, one that denies a fundamental human right—is somehow compatible with the Catholic faith. It is not. Please return home to the fullness of your Catholic faith. We await you with open arms to welcome you back,” he said.

Pro-Abortion Democrats Denied Communion Before

The issue already surfaced before during the 2020 campaign. During one of his stops, a South Carolina priest denied Biden’s attempt to receive communion.

More recently, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Biden “respectfully disagrees” with the US Conference of Catholic Bishops' opposition to fetal tissue research. Biden also pledged to repeal the Hyde Amendment and codify Roe v. Wade.

Meanwhile, Pelosi faced numerous questions about abortion and whether she believed unborn children were human beings. In 2015, when asked at least two questions about whether unborn children were human beings, she didn't directly answer.

Instead, she said she had “great standing” to speak on the issue and claimed she’s a devout practicing Catholic. Cordileone reportedly reacted to Pelosi before. He said that “This has been the consistent teaching of the Church from the very beginning, a teaching already discernible in the natural moral law, and so a teaching from which no Catholic can dissent in good conscience.”

Pope Benedict XVI Reminded Pelosi

According to the catechism’s section discussing abortion, this procedure is an abominable crime. In addition, Vatican officials reportedly said Pelosi should be denied the sacrament of Holy Communion.

Reports said that the previous pope, Benedict XVI, personally reminded Pelosi of the Church's stance on the issue during a private meeting. Neither the White House nor Pelosi's office responded to Fox News' request for comment.
