SF Bars to Require Patrons to Show Proof of Vaccination

Customers who want to drink in San Francisco bars will need to show proof of vaccination or negative Covid-19 tests. The proof of vaccination and test results must be issued within 72 hours. Patrons who prefer to drink outside do not need to show proof.

Increased COVID-19 Cases in San Francisco

The new rules resulted from an increase in COVID-19 cases in California. Specifically, a significant number of bar workers contracted coronavirus. This prompted bar owners to enact stricter measures to prevent the further spread of the virus. As a result, the San Francisco Bar Owner Alliance will require bar patrons to show proof of vaccination or negative COVID tests before allowing them to drink indoors. Otherwise, they can continue drinking in the outdoor area. 

According to a statement issued by the group, the measure will take effect Thursday.  “We believe we are obligated to protect our workers and their families and to offer safe space for customers to relax and socialize,” the statement added.

85% Of Bar Owners Approved The Measure

The San Francisco Bar Owner Alliance, representing around 500 local bar owners, said they polled members before arriving at a decision. The results of the survey showed that 85% of its members agreed with enacting stricter measures to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. The alliance also said that each bar will have the freedom to determine how they will enforce the ruling.  

The rise in COVID-19 cases in the US comes after a new wave of infections hit the country. In particular, the highly contagious Delta variant is spreading rapidly across the US. The variant is responsible for the majority of new cases reported in the country. Meanwhile, vaccination rates among American adults remain stagnant. 

Surge Despite 75% Of San Francisco Residents Already Vaccinated

The resurgence of COVID-19 happened despite the high vaccination rates in the San Francisco area. Nearly three of four San Francisco already completed their vaccinations. Despite the efforts, city health department data showed that coronavirus is slowly regaining its strength. From 10 new cases a day last month, the city is now reporting 118 as of last week. 

In the meantime, Breed hailed the San Francisco Bar Owner Alliance’s decision. She said the group’s rules will help protect employees and customers. The mayor also said last week that all city employees will require proof of vaccination before returning to work.

This echoes what California governor Gavin Newsom mandated for all state government workers.
