Protesters Demand for Mayor Wheeler’s Resignation; Portland Police Declare Riot
Following the incident where about hundreds of protesters marched towards Mayor Ted Wheeler‘s residence at a condominium tower demanding him to resign, Portland Police declared a riot.
According to police, the crowd of around 200 people mockingly celebrated the mayor’s birthday. This happened “before the demonstration quickly turned destructive,” and before someone reported ‘arson fire,' Fox News reported.
The Oregonian reported that the demonstration “quickly turned destructive as some in the crowd lit a fire in the street, then placed a picnic table from a nearby business on top of the fire to feed the blaze.”
The demonstrators also “shattered windows and broke into a ground-floor dental office took items including a chair, also added to the fire, and office supplies,” reported The Oregonian.
Mike Baker, a correspondent for the New York Times, tweeted about the incident. Some people in the crowd “broke windows and someone appears to have lit off a firework in the building,” he said. He also mentioned that some protesters felt mad about it. They say “it endangers the people in the building and minority-owned businesses in the complex.”
Portland Police then retweeted Baker’s post, saying, “This was the arson fire that prompted a riot declaration tonight. It was critical to secure the area to allow firefighters to respond to this dangerous situation.”
Some Portland demonstrators has aimed ay Wheeler. They “say he's been too heavy-handed with the use of the city’s police force,” Fox News then explained. They have issued demands such as police budget reductions and his resignation
