Ridiculous: Rashida Tlaib Calls for ‘No More Policing’ After Daunte Wright Shooting

Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan is currently facing intense criticism after she called to stop “policing” following Daunte Wright’s fatal shooting by a police officer.

On Twitter, the Michigan representative said that the incident wasn’t an accident. She also used “inherently and intentionally racist” to describe policing in the country, and said that law enforcement used “aggression and violence” on Wright. Tlaib then said that she’s “done” with people who condone what she called “government-funded murder.”

The representative then called for a stop to “policing, incarceration, and militarization,” adding that the issue is something that “can’t be reformed.”

Following this Twitter rant, several Congress members reacted to it and the issue at hand.

For one, Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine (Va.) decided to distance himself from Tlaib’s stance, given his comments to Fox News.

On Tuesday, Kaine admitted that the country still needs reforms related to “qualified immunity,” but he says he doesn’t want to disrespect the police. Instead, he said that police reform should happen when and where necessary.

Republicans Slam Tlaib on Twitter

Meanwhile, Republicans in Congress quickly criticized her statements.

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, for one, described Tlaib’s comments as “Insane” on Twitter. He said it explicitly shows how much Democrats “want to abolish the police.”

Meanwhile, Rep. Ken Buck (Colo.) also posted on Twitter, saying that if Tlaib doesn’t want bad gust to go to jail or if she doesn’t want the police protecting cities, they should start with her district to see what happens.

Incidents of looting and riots ravaged Minneapolis last Sunday following the shooting of Wright by a police officer. The incident happened in Brooklyn Center, Minn., which is just 10 minutes away from where George Floyd was pinned on the neck by former officer Derek Chauvin last May.

The Incident

The Brooklyn Center Police was not able to immediately identify Wright nor did they let people know his race. Following this, Brooklyn Center Police released a statement, saying law enforcement stopped a person right before 2 p.m. on Sunday. After they found out that the driver had an outstanding warrant, they tried to arrest him. However, the driver went back into the vehicle and drove away, as per the police. When he did, an officer fired at the car and hit Wright.

As per the police statement, the said vehicle went several blocks before it crashed into another vehicle. A female passenger was in the other car, and she only suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Prior to this incident, Tlaib, a part of the “progressive squad,” used the slogan “defund the police” already.

In May 2020, following the death of Floyd, Tlaib posted on Twitter, using the said slogan. In the post, she said that there is a valid reason for dismantling the “racist” system the country currently has in place. She also pointed out that the said system has “led to this pain.”

Similar statements have managed to divide Democrats.
