Rudy Giuliani: Ukraine Investigation Prompts Apartment Raid by Feds
Federal investigators have carried out a search warrant on former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani.
Investigators raided Giuliani and they managed to seize his electronic gadgets. This warrant comes as authorities move to investigate whether the former NYC mayor violated the law when he lobbied the Trump administration on behalf of officials from Ukraine in 2019. Giuliani has served as former President Donald Trump’s attorney on several high-profile cases.
FBI Carries Out Search Warrant on Giuliani
As per Robert Costello, Giuliani’s attorney, seven agents from the FBI arrived at his apartment at 6 a.m. on Wednesday. They stayed there for around two hours and managed to seize a number of electronic devices, such as laptops and cell phones.
Talking to Fox News, Costello says the incident was “totally unnecessary,” also claiming the raid was conducted to make Giuliani appear to be a criminal.
The warrant was issued based on the suspicion that the former NYC mayor violated the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) when he lobbied on behalf of Ukraine. The said act requires people to notify the State Department if they would serve as a foreign agent.
Also talking to Fox News, the FBI said they didn’t have any comment on the matter. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for New York’s Southern District has also declined to say any comment as well.
Giuliani served as an instrumental part in Trump’s efforts to have Ukraine then-candidate Joe Biden and his son Hunter investigated in connection to energy company Burisima Holdings. At that said company, Hunter Biden was on the board.
Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman, the former NYC mayor’s associates have already been given a number of charges. These charges include campaign finance violations. They allegedly funneled foreign money into various campaigns in the country to gain influence over those who were running.
On Wednesday afternoon, Andrew Giuliani, the former NYC mayor’s son, gave out a statement outside the apartment of his father. He slammed the raid, describing it as “disgusting” and “absurd,” and also as the Justice Department’s “continued politicization.”
