San Francisco Official in Charge of Cleaning up City’s Filthy Streets Arrested

San Francisco Public Works Director Mohammed Nuru was arrested Monday on suspicion of public corruption. Nuru was arrested alongside Nick Bovis, the owner of Lefty O-Doul’s – a popular sports bar in Fisherman’s Wharf. According to sources, Nuru was arrested “on suspicion of accepting bribes for airport concession contracts.” Both Nuru and Bovis were released, each on a $2 million bond, following their arrest.

“The complaint describes a web of corruption involving bribery, kickbacks, and side deals by one of San Francisco’s highest-ranking city employees,” said United States Attorney David Anderson. “The public is entitled to honest work from public officials, free from manipulation for the official’s own personal benefit and profit.”

Nuru is the top official in charge of the $312 million city public works budget since 2012. He was tasked to clean up San Francisco’s feces-filled streets, which critics say remain cluttered with feces, trash, and used needles amid a homelessness crisis. Nuru also oversees the design and construction of city facilities and the management of 1,600 employees.

Bovis, on the other hand, championed a portable toilet venture called “Tiny Potties” in 2017. It is aimed at “mitigating the city’s public defecation problem associated with its growing homeless population,” as reported by Fox News.

Nuru has been criticized by homelessness advocates for conducting sweeps of the city’s homeless encampments.
