SeaWorld to Permanently Lay Off Some Employees Who Were Already Furloughed Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic
A Securities and Exchange Commission filing reads that SeaWorld Entertainment is permanently laying off some people. These include its theme park and corporate employees. They already furloughed these employees because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“On September 4, 2020, SeaWorld Entertainment, Inc. (the “Company”), committed to a plan of termination, primarily impacting some of the Company’s currently furloughed employees,” the filing reads.
Layoffs Due To The Pandemic
“Substantially all of these employees were furloughed as part of the Company’s efforts to reduce operating expenses and adjust cash flows in light of business circumstances associated with the COVID-19 pandemic,” it added.
The filing also mentioned that SeaWorld will spend approximately $2.5 million to $3 million related to employee severance costs.
According to a SeaWorld spokesperson, while they were “able to bring thousands of furloughed Ambassadors back to work and hoped to bring back everyone, the current environment requires us to set up the company for long term success,” as said in a statement obtained by Fox Business.
“SeaWorld has determined that it must transition certain park and corporate personnel from a furloughed status to a permanent layoff,” the spokesperson added.
The report did not disclose information on how many workers or which parks this will affect.
Impacted employees will be directly notified by mail this week. They will also receive information regarding support available to them.
“Over our 60-year history, our parks have inspired millions of guests to love, protect and care for our planet’s animals and their habitats. We are sorry to have to part ways with any team members in this difficult moment, but their abiding commitment to our guests, fellow Ambassadors and animals is recognized and made a lasting impact,” the spokesperson said.
