Netflix, Other Streaming Services Win Big At Emmy Awards

Netflix, AppleTV, and other streaming services shone brightly at the Emmys Sunday night. They hauled in a number of major awards, lending added legitimacy to the streaming industry for the first time.

Streaming Services Win Big As Netflix Wins Best Drama Series

Netflix’s “The Crown” won the best drama series at the Emmy Awards. This is the first time a streaming service has won the top prize in the television industry’s premier awards body.

However, this isn’t the only award the show managed to walk away with. “The Crown” is a period performance dealing with the British royal family. N

ow on its fourth season, the show depicted Prince Charles’ doomed love affair with the late Princess Diana. It also showed glimpses of Charles’ affairs with Camilla Parker-Bowles, who he eventually married. In winning the top prize, “The Crown” outlasted Disney+’s “The Mandalorian,” and Netflix’s “Bridgerton.” 

In addition to the best drama series, “The Crown” also won the best writing and best directing of a drama series. It also swept the four major acting awards for a drama series.

It won Best Actor and Actress, as well as Best Supporting Actor and Actress. Meanwhile, Netflix's series about a female chess wizard titled “The Queen’s Gambit,” also won the best-limited series. 

AppleTV Wins Best Comedy Series

Meanwhile, AppleTV’s “Ted Lasso” also won big in the Comedy series department. “Ted Lasso” is a series about an American football coach trying his luck coaching a different kind of football across the game. Since its premiere last year on AppleTV, the show managed to continue its momentum going into the Emmys last Sunday. 

The comedy TV series won the “Outstanding comedy series” where they beat a number of strong contenders. This includes “Black-ish,” “Hacks,” “The Flight Attendant,” “Cobra Kai,” “The Kominsky Method,” “Pen15” and “Emily in Paris”. Creator and lead star Jason Sudeikis walked home with the “Outstanding Lead Actor” in a Comedy Series, his first Emmy award.

“I would say that this show is about family, this show is about mentors and teachers, this show is about teammates, and I wouldn't be here without those three things in my life,” he said. “Ted Lasso” actor Brett Goldstein also won Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, while Hannah Waddingham won Outstanding Supporting Actress. 

Streaming Services Getting Serious

Netflix finally managed to win the top award this year. By all means, streaming services got recognition from the Emmys even way back.

Nine years ago, Netflix hauled in 44 awards during the 2012 Emmys. During the same year, Apply also got more trophies compared to other broadcast networks. 

The Emmy Awards are given out annually by the Television Academy. The television industry considers them as the highest honors in the business. The Emmys are less popular with regular viewers compared to the Oscars or the Grammys.

In general, though, awards programs, in general, are losing viewership and interest over the last few years. However, Emmy wins can help both streaming services and broadcast networks increase their subscriber base.
