Brooklyn: Shooting in Subway Injures 16 While Suspect Still at Large
A manhunt is currently ongoing in New York City for a suspect who allegedly donned a gas mask, set off a smoke canister, and opened fire inside a subway train and station in Brooklyn during the morning commute on Tuesday. The said incident resulted in 29 people sustaining injuries, with five of them in critical condition.
Police have identified the person of interest in connection to the shooting as Frank James. Police said he has addresses both in Wisconsin and in Philadelphia, although his connection to NYC was not immediately clear.
“We are looking to determine if he has any connection to the attack,” said NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig.
At the moment, a $50,000 reward is being offered to anyone who has information about the shooting.
The incident started at around 8:24 a.m. as an N train bound for Manhattan approached the 36th St. station in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park. The suspect, which many described as a male, around 5 ft. 5 in. tall, with a heavy build, is still on the loose and is “dangerous,” according to New York Gov. Kathy Hochul around four hours following the attack.
The suspect’s gunshots hit several people on the subway car and on the platform, Commissioner Keechant Sewell of the New York Police said. He wore a green “construction type” vest with a hooded gray sweatshirt. According to Sewell, authorities had not identified the suspect.
Currently, no known explosive devices have been found on New York City subway trains according to Sewell. She also revealed that authorities are not investigating the incident as an act of terrorism at the moment. Additionally, she said no one of the victims sustained life-threatening injuries.
