Supreme Court Rules That Americans Have Right to Publicly Carry Firearms

The Supreme Court, on Thursday, ruled that Americans have the fundamental right to publicly carry firearms – a decision made following a deadly school shooting that took place just weeks before.

The U.S. Supreme court ruled 6-3 to strike down a New York law, requiring an individual to prove that they have a valid need for self-defense to get a gun permit. The landmark ruling will also prevent states from restricting a person’s ability to carry guns.

Even with large calls for stricter gun control following two mass shootings last month that stunned the nation, the country’s highest court sided with advocates who noted how the U.S. Constitution guarantees a person’s right to own and carry firearms.

This is the first ruling by the court in a decade that’s connected to a major Second Amendment case. It’s also a victory for the National Rifle Association, a powerful gun lobby.

In a statement, NRA executive vice president Wayne LaPierre said, “Today’s ruling is a watershed win for good men and women all across America and is the result of a decades-long fight the NRA has led.”

He also stated that “The right to self-defense and to defend your family and loved ones should not end at your home.”

Justice Clarence Thomas wrote the majority opinion, and in it, he said “the Second and Fourteenth Amendments protect an individual’s right to carry a handgun for self-defense outside the home.

“New York’s proper-cause requirement violates the Fourteenth Amendment by preventing law-abiding citizens with ordinary self-defense needs from exercising their Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms in public for self-defense,” he added.

Currently, the U.S. Senate is considering a bipartisan bill that would include modest gun control regulations.
