Reporter Who Broke Clinton Tarmac Meeting Found Dead

Christopher Sign, the ABC TV anchor famous for reporting the infamous 2016 Clinton tarmac meeting, was found dead Saturday. The veteran reporter broke the story about the meeting between former President Bill Clinton and then-Attorney General Loretta Lynch. Sign, 45, is survived by his wife and three children.

Apparent Suicide

First responders found Sign dead inside a residence early Saturday morning. “At 8:13 a.m. Saturday, the Hoover 911 center received a call of a person down at a residence on Scout Trace.

Hoover police and fire personnel arrived to find the 45-year-old [Christopher] Sign dead. Hoover police Lt. Keith Czeskleba said the death is being investigated as a suicide,” AL reported. 

At the time of his death, Sign worked as a weeknight anchor for ABC 33/40 in Birmingham, Alabama. As a result of his demise, Eric Land, VP and general manager of ABC 33/40, issued a statement for their fallen colleague.

“Our deepest sympathy is shared with Christopher's loving family and close friends. We have lost a revered colleague whose indelible imprint will serve forever as a hallmark of decency, honesty, and journalist integrity. We can only hope to carry on his legacy. May his memory be for a blessing,” the statement read.

The Tarmac Meeting of 2016

During this period, the FBI was investigating then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for using a private email server at work. Specifically, using private servers was against government protocols for security reasons, and Clinton’s position at the State Department was highly sensitive. 

Sign, working for KNXV-TV in Phoenix at the time in June 2016, reported that former President and former Arizona governor Bill Clinton privately met with AG Lynch on the tarmac of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

The tarmac meeting lasted between 20 to 30 minutes, with both parties saying it was personal in nature. Days later, then-FBI Director James Comey said that Secretary Clinton won’t face criminal charges for using her private email server. This is despite the fact that Clinton possibly mishandled classified information.

Blindsided By The Tarmac Meeting

Prior to the FBI’s announcement, Department of Justice Inspector General Michael Horowitz issued a report on Hillary Clinton’s email investigation and the tarmac meeting.

He said that AG Lynch’s staff felt “blindsided” and “shocked” that she would meet with Clinton. Consequently, a senior Lynch staffer broke up the tarmac meeting the moment she realized the impropriety.

Later on, Sign would write a book about the meeting titled “Secret on the Tarmac”. He also told Fox News last year that “there's so much that doesn't add up” about the meeting.
