Texas County Asks for a Statewide Vote on Secession from the United States
A rural southwest Texas County Commissioners' Court has asked the Legislature to include a secession question on the ballot for the 2023 General Election. The resolution voted by Edwards County on Tuesday called for Texas to withdraw from the United States and resume its independence.
The Edwards County Commissioners issued a resolution Tuesday night outlining a laundry list of grievances against the United States, including the national debt, usurpation of states' rights, restrictions on private industry, restrictions on the Second Amendment, and failures to enforce immigration laws, among other things.
Commissioners Marty Graham, Lee Sweeten, and Kenneth Reed all signed the resolution. Edwards County Judge Souli Asa Shanklin also signed it. However, Matt Fry did not join them.
The Texas Nationalist Movement (TNM) spokesman described it as a “responsible step,” adding that it is thought to be the first county to approve a resolution of this nature.
TNM President Daniel Miller spoke to Breitbart Texas, saying, “Edwards County is the first county to pass this resolution but it most certainly won’t be the last. Pressure is mounting on legislators and statewide elected officials to, at a minimum, put the TEXIT question on the ballot.”
Edwards County urges the Texas Legislature to act on articles 33 and 335 of the Texas Republican Platform for 2022.
