Abbott To Drop Off Undocumented Texas Migrants At US Capitol

On Wednesday, Governor Greg Abbott said that he will ship undocumented Texas migrants to the steps of the US Capitol in Washington DC. The state will provide charter buses to drop off the migrants. There, they will become the federal government’s problem and not theirs.

Abbott To Drop Off Ilegal Texas Migrants To Washington DC

Texas border checkpoints are currently struggling to manage the influx of migrants attempting to enter the US. State officials are bracing for a surge of migrants once again as Title 42 expires next month.

Reportedly, President Joe Biden’s administration has no plans to renew the Title 42 health order. Slated to expire on May 23, this Trump-era order uses the shield of COVID-19 prevention to expel migrants at the southern border. 

Governor Abbott To Release Texas Migrants to Washington

The anticipated rush of new Texas migrants will once again strain resources in the Lone Star state. This is why Republican governor Abbott decided to take drastic steps to get Washington’s attention.

His plan is for the state to provide charter buses to pick up Texas migrants from overwhelmed local communities. Then, they will drop off the migrants at the steps of the US Capitol in Washington DC.  

“We are sending them to the United States Capitol,” Abbott said. There, the federal government can address the needs of the “people that they are allowing to come across our border”.

Abbott also noted that cities along the Texas-Mexico border already bus migrants to San Antonio. “So I said I got a better idea. As opposed to busing these people to San Antonio, let's continue the ride all the way to Washington DC,” he said. 

Up to 900 Buses

Meanwhile, W. Nim Kidd, chief of the Texas Division of Emergency Management, said he will follow Abbott’s directive. His agency will “use as many buses as we need” to get the job done.

Previously, Kidd said that they used up to 900 buses for evacuations. Abbott also ordered the state Department of Public Safety to conduct “enhanced” inspections of vehicles entering from Mexico. This ensures that residents get spared from unsafe vehicles or drivers. 

 In addition, Abbott announced additional moves to deter the flow of illegal migrants into Texas. This includes installing razor wire in low-water crossings.

Later this week, the Texas National Guard will start phase one of its “mass migration” rehearsals. This is in preparation for a potential surge of migrants at the border.

Meanwhile, Maj. General Thomas Suelzer, the Texas National Guard adjutant general said they’re ready. “If you're a caravan organizer and you think you're going to overwhelm or overrun a port of entry, we'll be there waiting for you.”  

Increased Lighting in Heavy Traffic Areas

Abbott will also install additional lighting in areas used frequently by human smugglers. The project will get funds from local taxpayers.

“Securing the border does not come cheap. Securing the border would cost Texas nothing if the federal government was doing its job,” he added. 

“But because Joe Biden is not securing the border,” Texas will have to step up. Instead, we’ll have to “spend Texas taxpayer money doing the federal government's job.”
