Texas Takes a Stand to Prohibit ‘Vaccine Passports’
On Monday, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott released an executive order that bans vaccine passports. He said that a system that tracks people who have received the vaccine against COVID-19 is an infringement on citizens’ rights.
When he announced the executive order, Abbott said that every day, people in Texas continue to see a return to normalcy as more receive the COVID-19 vaccine. However, he also said that getting vaccinated is “always voluntary and never forced.”
Abbott added that the government need not require the people of Texas to show vaccine passports as proof just so they can go do their daily routine. He said this is the reason for the executive order that he released. He also mentioned that they will continue to vaccinate more people in the state. However, he said they will do so without stepping on the personal freedoms of Texans.
In recent weeks, Abbott has come under scrutiny for lifting the mask mandate in Texas. He has also been criticized for the way he handled the major snowstorm that left many Texans without utilities and heating for days.
Florida Governor Vows to Release Similar EO Against Vaccine Passports
The Governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, also promised to create a similar executive action last week. He said he aims to prevent companies from requiring people to show and have vaccine passports before providing them services.
DeSantis said they have always aimed to provide the vaccine for everyone but never mandate it. He added that, while it’s advised for the vulnerable to take, they are not forcing you to get it.
The Florida governor also said it is “completely unacceptable” for both the government and private sector to implement such a requirement on people just so a person can “participate in normal society.”
Dr. Anthony Fauci said on Monday that the federal government has no plans on mandating COVID-19 vaccine passports.
