The Rise in Crime Will Put Republicans Back in Power Says CNN

The country has experienced a resurgence of violence and crime in the past year. This has fueled the odds of Republicans reclaiming its Congress majority in 2022, as per a CNN analyst.

Republicans can make the increase in crime become “a culture war wedge issue,” as per John Avlon of CNN. He added that as summer comes, which is usually when the crime rate goes up, public safety becomes the priority in the minds of the people, even following decades of decline.

Avlon said Democrats would need to deal with it or experience political backlash.

With this, the CNN host touched upon something that mainstream media usually ignore: more law-abiding citizens and law enforcement officers, over time, have become targets in their own communities.

According to the analyst, major U.S. cities experienced a 33% increase in the number of murders last year.

Avlon then warned that this is far from over. He said that a spike in crimes like homicides and assaults continued in the first quarter of 2021. Additionally, he said that the number of police fatalities in line of duty is at 141 as of last May 16.

According to National Public Radio, by the end of 2020, over 750 murders have happened in Chicago, as per the city’s police department. Compared to the count in 2019, this is over 50%. In Mid-December, the city of Los Angeles experienced a 30% increase in homicides compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, New York City saw an almost-40% increase by Dec. 20, compared to that in 2019.
