Texas Dem Leader Resigns After Calling Sen. Tim Scott ‘Oreo’

The Texas Democratic Party official who termed Senator Tim Scott(R-SC) an “oreo” submitted his resignation following widespread condemnation for his racial slur.

When used as a derogatory slur, “Oreo” means “a Black person who adopts the characteristic mentality and behavior of white middle-class society.”

Democrat Leader Resigns In Shame

In an interview with the Washington Examiner, Lamar County Democratic Party Chairman Gary O'Connor announced he submitted his resignation.

“I am deeply and sincerely sorry for my inappropriate and hurtful use of the racist term I used to describe Sen. Tim Scott on my personal Facebook page.

It was insensitive, and I have embarrassed myself and my party by its use,” he said. “As a result, I feel compelled to offer my resignation as chair of the Lamar County Democratic Party for consideration by the County Executive Committee,” he added.

O’Connor’s resignation follows his very disparaging comments against Senator Scott, who rebutted President Joe Biden’s recent address. He posted his reactions to Scott’s rebuttal, which read: “I had hoped that Scott might show some common sense, but it seems clear he is little more than an oreo with no real principles.

Outrage Over Oreo

Outrage followed O’Connor’s insensitive remarks. Texas Governor Greg Abbott led other Texas political leaders in condemning the post.

“This is disgusting, hateful, and completely unacceptable. O’Connor must apologize to @SenatorTimScott & step down immediately,” Abbott tweeted Saturday. He called on Texas Democrats to censure O’Connor immediately. 

Representative Pat Fallon (R-TX), also called out O’Connor. He issued a statement condemning the unfair and uncalled-for remarks.

“Gary O’Connor’s comment against Senator Tim Scott is abhorrent, insulting, and unforgivable. Both he and the entire Lamar County Democratic Party should be ashamed of this racist behavior. This kind of behavior is not tolerable in Texas, the United States, or any political party,” he wrote. 

‘Uncle Tim’ Trended As Well

Leftists also took advantage of Scott’s rebuttal by making posts with the hashtag #UncleTim. The hashtag is an updated term for “Uncle Tom” using a similarly sounding epithet. Uncle Tom is the titular character from the 1852 novel “Uncle Tom’s Cabin.” 

In addition, “Uncle Tom” is also used as a derogatory epithet for an excessively subservient person. It refers to a person who betrays their own group by participating in its oppression, whether willingly or not.

#UncleTim trended for a few hours before Twitter banned the phrase from appearing in its trending section. However, Twitter didn’t bother removing tweets containing the offensive term.

‘America Is Not A Racist Country’

Scott is the only black Republican in the United States Senate. To respond to Biden’s recent address to Congress, the GOP chose him to deliver their reply.

In his speech last Wednesday, Scott insisted that “America is not a racist country,” and he spoke in defense of Georgia’s election integrity law. He said he knows the pain of getting stopped by police while driving. However, he doesn’t think that makes the country racist. 

Even as Senator Tim Scott faced ridicule for his announcement, many leaders shared his thoughts. The New York Times asked presidential candidates last January 2020 if the United States was a racist country.

Not one candidate said yes. This lineup includes major Democrats such as Senators Bernie Sanders (VT)  Elizabeth Warren (MA), former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
