President Trump Condemns Burning of the U.S. Flag: “It Should Be Stopped, and Now!”
On Tuesday evening, President Trump condemned the burning of the flag after protesters set fire to a large U.S. flag. The flag was tied to a traffic light pole at an intersection outside of Lafayette Park.
President Trump tweeted: “It is ashame [sic] that Congress doesn’t do something about the lowlifes that burn the American Flag. It should be stopped, and now!”
More than this, protesters also burned smaller American flags “on the embers of the larger one a day after demonstrators defaced and attempted to pull down an Andrew Jackson statue in Lafayette Park,” Fox News reported.
The police came before the protesters were successful.

According to The Hill, President Trump made a similar pitch at a campaign rally in Tulsa, Okla.
“We ought to come up with legislation that if you burn the American flag you go to jail for one year,” Trump said. He also mentioned, “We oughta do it. We talk about freedom of speech… but that’s desecration.”
The president has also mentioned consequences for flag burning in the past.
Trump lauded law enforcement officers as he urged “long-term jail sentences” for anyone who vandalized and tried to pull down a statue of President Andrew Jackson from Lafayette Square on Monday night.
“We are looking at long-term jail sentences for these vandals and these hoodlums and the anarchists and agitators, and call them whatever you want,” Trump said. “Some people don’t like that language, but that’s what they are. They’re bad people. They don’t love our country. And they’re not taking down our monuments. I just want to make that clear.”
