Trump Flips Another Federal Court to Conservative Control
Barbara Lagoa will now be serving as an appellate judge who oversees a district that includes Georgia, Alabama, and Florida. Lagoa was confirmed to the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals by an 80-15 vote.
Both Lagoa and fellow Miamian and Florida Supreme Court justice Robert Luck were confirmed to sit on the 11th Circuit. According to Free Beacon, their ascension to the circuit court “decisively swung the balance of the bench to Republican appointees. President Donald Trump had previously moved the Third Circuit and Second Circuit to conservative control.”

The federal court transformation has been a project of President Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. According to Carrie Severino, policy director of the conservative legal group Judicial Crisis Network, Lagoa’s appointment is a major achievement for Trump’s presidency.

Leading Republicans expressed their positive reactions. “I am confident Justice Lagoa’s experience will serve her well as she begins the next chapter of her service to our nation as a U.S. Circuit Judge for the Eleventh Circuit,” said Sen. Marco Rubio. Attorney General Ashley Moody also said, “An experienced jurist committed to the rule of law, Judge Lagoa has served Florida honorably. She made history as the first Cuban-American woman appointed to Florida’s Third District Court of Appeals and the Florida Supreme Court where she authored more than 300 majority opinions. I am confident she will preside honorably over the U.S. Court of Appeals of the 11th Circuit.”
