The chances of Trump leaving White House premises will depend on Joe Biden winning the Electoral College.

During Thanksgiving yesterday, Trump spoke to reporters for the first time after the elections. He said he will leave if the Electoral College votes for President-elect Joe Biden. Observers believe this is the closest thing he said to concede. The media asked if he would go once Biden wins the Electoral College, Trump said: “Certainly I will. Certainly, I will. And you know that.”

Conceding is a Different Matter

Conceding is another matter. Trump said that conceding is hard for him as “we know there was massive fraud.” He insisted that “it was a rigged election … at the highest level.” However, Trump never offered any concrete proof of the voter fraud he alleged happened on a large scale.

“As to whether or not we can get this apparatus moving quickly — because time isn't on our side, everything else is on our side, facts are on our side, this was a massive fraud.”

Additionally, Trump said that if Biden wins, the Electoral College, “made a mistake, cause this election was a fraud.” When asked for more details, Trump called out the reporter asking the question. He said: “Don't talk to me that way. I'm the President of the United States. Don't ever talk to the president that way.”

Trump Took to Twitter

Since the elections, Trump kept a low profile. He avoided answering media queries and seldom appeared on TV.  Instead, he took to Twitter almost entirely, fuming about the conduct of elections. Then, he supported the General Services Administration's decision to okay the transition. Also, he tweeted that he pardoned his former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.

On Thanksgiving, the President went online to talk to troops stationed overseas. Then, he faced the White House media to share his Thanksgiving ideas. On a tangent, he began throwing allegations of widespread cheating in the elections. Reacting to news that Biden got the most votes in US election history, Trump felt incredulous. “There's no way that Biden got 80 million votes,” he tweeted repeatedly.

The US Electoral College

The US Electoral College system is a group of presidential electors from all states of the Union. The constitution requires them to meet every four years to vote for the President and Vice President. Except for Maine and Nebraska, electors from each state vote for the candidate who won in their state.

The total electors per state equal the number of its US senators and congressmen. The latter can change each decade depending on its population size. At present, there are 538 electors total in the United States. Consequently, a winning candidate needs a majority of 270 votes to clinch the victory.

Biden Won 306 Electoral College Votes

During the last elections, Biden received 306 Electoral College votes. This is 36 more than the required 270, so he captured the presidency. Meanwhile, Trump received 232. After all, states verify their election results, the electors will convene. On December 14, they will formalize their state’s votes. Meanwhile, in the popular vote, Biden led Trump by more than 6 million votes.

During the elections, Biden managed to flip six states from red to blue. This consists of Michigan, Wisconsin, Arizona, Pennsylvania, and Georgia. The turnaround helped him reach the 270 votes needed for the Presidency. Consequently, Trump’s legal team sued some of these states. They alleged that systemic cheating and massive fraud happened. While these allegations tied up some of the countings, most cases got dismissed.

Georgia Runoff

When Trump said he’d leave the white as soon as Biden wins the Electoral College, he said he’ll be very busy. He said, “I think that there will be a lot of things happening between now and the 20th of January, a lot of things.” Analysts speculated on what the President’s plans are.

For one, Trump will surely campaign for the two Republican senators running in Georgia. The Senate currently holds a Republican majority 50-48. If incumbents David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler win, the GOP maintains their majority. If Democratic upstarts Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock win, the Senate will have a 50-50 tie. However, incoming Vice President Kamala Harris holds the tie-breaking vote. Thus, the Democrats can reclaim the Senate majority should they win the runoff.

Trump’s Plans for 2021

Reports asked Trump if he would attend the incoming President’s inauguration ceremonies. The President didn’t answer if he will honor the time-honored tradition. Also, the media asked Trump if he already made plans for his political future after his last day at the White House. He said he didn’t want to talk yet.
