GOP Voters Say Trump Should Run Again in 2024

In the latest POLITICO-Morning Consult poll, 56%, or over half of Republican voters say that former President Donald Trump should run again for president in 2024. 36% of Republican voters think he probably or definitely should not.

Post Trump Era

The results of the survey provide a picture of what Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (KY) faces at the beginning of the post-Trump era. Despite the new White House tenant, a large chunk of GOP voters continue to support Trump and the MAGA agenda. 

While some Republican lawmakers began distancing themselves from the former President following the January 6 Capitol riots, many remained supportive of Trump, especially during the present impeachment attempts by Democrats. In fact, 45 out of 50 Republican senators voted on Tuesday with Senator Rand Paul (KY) questioning the constitutionality of Trump’s second impeachment trial. While the point of order lost 55-45, the voting showed that Democrats will find it difficult to secure the supermajority votes of 67 needed to convict Trump.

GOP at a Crossroads

McConnell originally made it sound like he had enough with Trump. During a Senate floor speech, he said Trump and company fed lies to a mob of protesters, who then stormed the Capitol. Because of that, McConnell concluded that Trump committed impeachable offenses. Consequently, the Democrats’ impeachment movement can make it easier for the GOP to remove Trump from the party. Fast forward to this week, and McConnell seems to recover from his political epiphany. He voted with the rest of the 44 Republican Senators and agreed with Paul. Along with the rest of the Republicans who turned against Trump, they are now expressing fears that Big Tech is out to get Trump supporters. Twitter went after Trump supporter and MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell recently and removed thousands of QAnon related accounts earlier. 

Meanwhile, the GOP faces a resurging new wave of populist Republicans. Georgia firebrand representative Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene said that a vast majority of Republicans are no longer to the GOP but have shifted their loyalty to Trump. Meanwhile, Representative Matt Gaetz declared that the ongoing impeachment is just an extension of an ongoing left-wing “cancel culture” campaign. 

Patriot Party 

At the same time, Republicans and Republican-leaning independent voters are split between the Republican Party and Trump’s planned Patriot Party According to the same Politico / Good morning poll. 33% of GOP voters say they prefer being members of the Republican Party. Meanwhile, 30% said they would rather join Trump’s touted Patriot Party. 11% did not share an enthusiasm for either party. 

However, Senior adviser to the 2020 Trump campaign  Jason Miller dismissed rumors about the Patriot Party. Trump's immediate goal “is to win back the House and Senate for Republicans in 2022,”  Miller said. 

Office of the Former President 

Back in his home state in Florida, Trump recently opened the “Office of the Former President” in Palm Beach County. “The office will be responsible for managing President Trump’s correspondence, public statements, appearances, and official activities to advance the interests of the United States and to carry on the agenda of the Trump administration through advocacy, organizing and public activism,” the office stated. Trump “will always and forever be a champion for the American people,” it added. 

Trump himself has yet to declare any concrete plans about his post-White House. He did tease about another run in 2024 during last year’s White House Christmas party. “It’s been an amazing four years. We’re trying to do another four years, otherwise, I’ll see you in four years,” he remarked.
