Trump to Launch Leadership Political Action Committee to Uphold His Influence
President Trump plans to set up a so-called leadership political action committee (PAC). Using this, he aims to let him keep his hold on the Republican Party even after he leaves the White House. The PAC will also allow him to fundraise for federal election candidates, Newsweek reported.
On Tuesday, Trump campaign communications director Tim Murtaugh told Fox News that “the president always planned to do this, win or lose, so he can support candidates and issues he cares about, such as combating voter fraud.”
According to Fox News, “the announcement of the leadership political action committee could come as early as this week.”
The PAC can “spend unlimited amounts to support candidates for federal office in what is known as independent expenditure,” Newsweek explained. It will be limited to donations of $5,000 per year per donor.
“The new PAC could accept donations from an unlimited number of donors and Trump's campaign committee, Donald J. Trump for President, would be able to contribute within the legal limitations,” said Newsweek.
According to Murtaugh, the new PAC would be set up “so he [Trump] can support candidates and issues he cares about, such as combating voter fraud.”
Trump’s campaign has repeatedly made accusations of fraud in its emails since Election Day. However, none of these fraud accusations has been proven to this day.
