Trump Announces News Conference on the Anniversary of Attack on The US Capitol
Former President Donald Trump revealed that he will hold a news conference next month. This will take place at his resort and residence in south Florida on the anniversary of the US Capitol siege.
On Tuesday, Trump announced via a statement released by Save America that “I will be having a news conference on January 6th at Mar-a-Lago.”
January 6th, 2022, marks one year since the attack on the U.S. Capitol done by right-wing extremists and other supporters of the former president. These people aimed to disrupt now-President Joe Biden’s Electoral College victory’s congressional certification in the 2020 election.
For more than a year, the former president has kept on making claims that the presidential election in 2020 was plagued with “massive” voter fraud and that it was stolen. He also repeated these false claims in his latest statement, reiterating that his electoral defeat was “the rigged Presidential Election of 2020” and that “the insurrection took place on November 3rd.”
Trump After the Capitol Siege
During the weeks following the 2020 election, a myriad of legal challenges filed by Trump and his allies had been shot down in the half dozen states where Biden narrowly won against Trump to secure an Electoral victory. Additionally, then-Attorney General William Barr revealed that the Department of Justice had not seen any fraud of any scale that could flip the election result.
The Capitol Siege on Jan. 6 soon came after the then-president urged a large crowd of his supporters at a rally near the White House to march towards the Capitol and show their strength by protesting the Congress’ certification of the election. In the riot, five people, specifically four protesters and a Capitol Police officer, died.
Following the siege, the House of Representatives impeached Trump for inciting the attack. Ten Republican House members joined the Democrat majority in voting to impeach the then-president.
Trump, in his refusal to concede in his electoral defeat, made history by becoming the first president in a century and a half to skip his successor’s inauguration.
A couple of weeks after this, he was acquitted during his impeachment trial in the Senate. Seven Republicans and all 50 Democrats voted to convict him. This was 10 votes short of the two-thirds majority required by the Constitution.
However, Trump remains to be popular among Republican voters. He is also still quite influentials with politicians in his party as he still continues to play kingmaker in Republican politics. He also repeatedly hints at running once again for the White House in 2024.
