Former President Donald Trump came back to visit the southern US border on Wednesday. He didn’t like what he saw and promptly called out President Joe Biden for keeping the US-Mexican border wide open.

Southern US Border Opened Up

Trump rued that the southern US border isn’t as tightly guarded as it used to be. “There has never been a border so secure as the southern border that we had, and now it’s opened up,” he said.

During his visit to the border, the former president also received a briefing from Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott. Also present are a number of state law enforcement and border officials.

Trump also took the opportunity to slam Biden, who he blamed for reversing key immigration policies implemented during his administration. “Now we have an open, really dangerous, border. More dangerous than it’s ever been in the history of our country, and we better go back fast,” he said.

Biden Ended Many Restrictive Policies

As soon as he assumed office, Biden reversed many of the restrictive immigration policies implemented by Trump. This includes a promise to build a border wall and make Mexico pay for the construction.

Border security became a top policy during his administration. In fact, Trump declared a state of emergency in 2019. He ordered the diversion of federal funds heading to the military to pay for the border wall.

Biden immediately put a stop to the construction of the border wall. The president also ended a program that required migrants to stay in Mexico while they waited for their asylum cases. In contrast to Trump, Biden pledged to fulfill his 2020 campaign pledge of creating a more humane immigration system.

Surge In US Border Arrests

This year, arrests along the southern US border with Mexico surged to their highest monthly averages in 20 years. Incidentally, Biden started his term in 2021 as well, so Republicans blamed Biden’s immigration policies for the influx.

Trump didn't mince words in saying this is all Biden’s fault. He said that they had a number of great policies that secured the border but Biden ended it. “This didn’t take place over three months or five months.

This took place in the first week,” Trump said. He said that Biden likely ended his policies because Trump thought of it.  “We’re going to admire the wall and how it works,” Trump said at the end of the briefing as he and Abbott headed out to tour an unfinished part of the border wall.

Governor Promises To Finish The Wall In Texas

Abbott has pledged to finish the construction of the wall located within Texas. A few weeks ago, he announced that Texas will implement a number of steps to stem the flow of migrants crossing the border illegally.

Texas will place temporary fencing along the border while he finishes the construction of the actual border wall. He also pledged to increase the presence of state police along the border.

He also vowed to jail those caught trespassing on private property. Afterward, Abbott called Trump “a great friend to Texas” who “stepped up and he secured our border and kept Texas and America safe.”

In addition, the Texas governor also talked about the border crisis. He said that things changed rapidly once Biden assumed the presidency, saying it's “amazing and disastrous” at the same time. “The people of Texas have been pleading for us to be able to step up and help restore safety and security in their lives and is exactly why Texas is stepping up and doing a job that is truly the federal government’s job – a job that you did but a job that the Biden administration is completely failing us on,” Abbott added.

The Border Solution Is At The Border

The Republican governor also criticized the administration for trying to look into the root of the crisis instead of addressing the current situation. “There is one place to solve all the problems on the border and that is on the border and that’s exactly where the Biden administration needs to devote their resources to get the job done,” Abbott added.
