Twelve Family Members Contract Coronavirus During Birthday Gathering; Infect Three Others
A family in Texas warns people about gatherings ahead of Thanksgiving after a dozen of them contracted the coronavirus at a birthday dinner. They later spread it to three others who were not at the party.
Alexa Aragonez, 26, said that the 12 family members “reflected on their recent actions ahead of the indoor celebration,” according to the Star-Telegram. Aragonez was not one of the 15 diagnosed with COVID-19.
“They felt collectively they had been extremely vigilant since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, for the most part going to work and then coming home, believing in masks and social distancing, Alexa said. They decided it would be safe to gather, she said, if they kept it within their small circle. To not get together for a birthday would almost seem unthinkable,” the report added.
Family Gatherings Still Unsafe From Coronavirus
According to Aragonez, events such as birthdays are excuses for everyone in the family to be together.
Aragonez said she dropped off her 57-year-old mother at their relative's house but she herself did not attend the party. Fox News reported that she “said the family figured that since everyone was feeling healthy and keeping within the COVID-19 social guidelines, gathering to share a meal would be safe.”
Several family members started to feel sick and got tested for COVID-19 days later. Aragonez’s mother contracted the virus and had to be hospitalized.
“I went to my nephew’s house and loved seeing my family,” Aragonez’s mother, Enriqueta, said in a video before she got released from the hospital. “But now, I’m fighting against COVID-19,” she added. “Now I’m in the hospital and can’t see my family.”
