Uber to Require Drivers and Riders to Wear Face Masks to Help Slow the Spread of COVID-19
Ridesharing app Uber will soon require its drivers and riders to wear face coverings inside vehicles. This is to help slow the spread of the novel coronavirus during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Fox Business, Uber will likely roll out this policy in the next few weeks.
“As countries reopen, Uber is focused on safety and proceeding with caution,” said an Uber spokesperson, according to Fox Business. “Today, we continue to ask riders to stay home if they can, while shipping safety supplies to drivers who are providing essential trips. At the same time, our teams are preparing for the next phase of recovery, where we will all have a role to play.”
“We'll communicate updates directly to users when ready, but in the meantime, we continue to urge all riders and drivers to wear masks or face coverings when using Uber,” the spokesperson added.

In an update from April 9th, Uber announced that they began shipping disinfectant sprays to some drivers. Also, they were distributing “millions of ear-loop face masks to active drivers and delivery people around the world.”
According to Fox Business, drivers in major cities and states that have implemented face mask mandates are being prioritized. These cities include cities like New York, Los Angeles, New Jersey, and Washington, D.C. As supplies become available, more will be distributed throughout the rest of the U.S.
USA Today reported that the company is developing detection technology that will be able to detect if drivers are wearing face masks before they begin accepting trips. It is also investigating methods to confirm that riders also have face coverings.
