Winter Weather Mayhem: Texas Power Outages with More Snow Coming
Severe winter weather conditions showed no signs of stopping on Tuesday as it caused destruction and power outages in multiple states, including Texas.
On top of this, more bad weather is coming. Another winter storm is forecasted to pass through the South and Midwest on Wednesday. This storm will then move to the Mid-Atlantic area of the country and to the Northeast the day after.
As per the weather service, around 115 million Americans may have to face the next storm.
In Texas, around 3 million places, both homes and businesses, experienced power outages as of Tuesday afternoon due to the severe storm, which brought record-low temperatures. Some households have been without power for more than 24 hours.
According to the weather service, more power outages may take place in the said state. This threatens the ability of people to have heating amid the single-digit temperatures battering the nation.
On Monday, Texas Gov. Greg Abbot announced the deployment of the state’s National Guard. They are instructed to conduct welfare checks and aid Texans who would need to go to one of the warming centers across the state.
Because of the bitter cold, power companies in the state find themselves unable to produce electricity from coal, natural gas and wind.
For one, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas said that it has started to make “controlled outages” on Monday. This comes in an effort to protect the electric grid from cascading outages.
