A couple in Missouri is being criticized for brandishing guns in their front yard. They did this “as protesters passed told police the group broke a gate to get onto the private street,” Fox News reported. According to the couple, they only retrieved their firearms when they saw that “multiple” people were already armed.

The couple has been identified as Mark McCloskey, 63, and his wife Patricia, 61. Al Watkins, an attorney for the couple, said the protest was largely peaceful. Watkins also mentioned that the couple did not bring their guns outside until two white men started to become threatening.

“At the time, their fear was, these people, two in particular, that were marching along with the Black Lives Matter protest participants – all peaceful. They were acting in a fashion inconsistent with the message being given,” Watkins said. “My clients were not arming themselves against peaceful protesters, they were arming themselves about people with a really bad motive, a motive that runs afoul of the fundamental tenets of our country,” he then mentioned.

The Incident

According to Watkins, after the couple brought the guns outside, other people began to threaten them.

“My clients, though, had to deal with comments that were from two individuals that were perpetrating these acts of violence and, not charging, but coming toward them and doing so in a fashion that was threatening, menacing, and in a fashion inconsistent with the Black Lives Matter message.”

According to the McCloskeys, the reason for pulling their guns out was that they were “in fear for our lives.”

“It was like the storming of the Bastille, the gate came down and a large crowd of angry, aggressive people poured through,” Mark McCloskey said. “I was terrified that we’d be murdered within seconds. Our house would be burned down, our pets would be killed,” he then added.

A viral Twitter video shows the McCloskeys standing outside their home as he yells while holding a long-barreled gun. His wife was next to him, holding a handgun.
