Poll: Trump Retains Lead Despite Mug Shot and Debate Absence
Despite missing the first Republican primary debate and having his mugshot made public, former President Donald Trump still has a significant lead over the other GOP presidential contenders, according to a recent national survey.
The former president is the top pick for 58% of prospective Republican primary voters, according to a Morning Consult poll released on Tuesday. This puts him 44 percentage points ahead of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is the top choice for only 14% of respondents. These numbers are unchanged from the previous week.
“Trump’s lead unshaken by debate absence and mug shot,” the survey’s subtitle reads.
The following candidates are ranked after Trump and DeSantis: businessman Vivek Ramaswamy at 10%, former Vice President Mike Pence at 6%, former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley at 5%, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie at 3%, South Carolina Senator Tim Scott at 2%, and former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson at 1%. The support for Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, who recently suspended his presidential campaign, former Texas Rep. Will Hurd, and North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum is 0 percent.
While Trump is the second pick for 32% of possible GOP primary voters who support DeSantis, Desantis is the second choice for 37% of those same GOP primary voters who support the former president.
According to the poll, Ramaswamy is the second pick for 26% of Trump supporters and 17% of DeSantis supporters. 11% of Trump supporters and 13%of DeSantis supporters support Pence as their second choice.
The poll also reveals that considerably more fans of Trump (13%) than DeSantis (3%), are unsure of where their allegiances would lie if their top candidate were to withdraw from the race.
3,617 likely Republican primary voters, including registered voters who stated they intended to cast a ballot in their state's GOP presidential primary or caucus in 2024, were included in the survey, which was conducted from August 25 to 27. The margin of error, which was not weighted, was two percentage points.
