Even if hypothetically found guilty of a felony, former President Donald Trump still commands the Republican primary field by double digits, according to a new Yahoo! A YouGov survey revealed.
The poll asked Republicans and Republican-leaners, “If Trump is convicted of a serious crime in the coming months, who would you vote for in your state’s 2024 Republican primary?”
In that scenario, the former president still has a 35 percent support margin over his GOP rivals, giving him a double-digit lead. With 20% of the vote, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis trails by 15 percentage points, followed by anti-woke businessman Vivek Ramaswamy (9%), South Carolina Senator Tim Scott (5%), former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, former Vice President Mike Pence, and former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, who each receive 3% of the vote. 17 percent more people declare that they are unsure.
It's noteworthy that the poll was conducted from August 17–21, 2023, before both the first Republican primary debate and the public distribution of Donald Trump's now-famous mugshot.
Trump chose to engage in counter-programming instead of participating in the debate, as his interview with Tucker Carlson aired five minutes before the 9:00 p.m. debate began. debate at EDT.
Nevertheless, much post-debate analysis came to an end Thursday night once all eyes were focused on Trump's detention. His fourth indictment in a couple of months led to his arrest by the Fulton County Sheriff's Office on charges from the indictment of District Attorney Fani Willis.
