Alaska Airlines has announced that it is rolling out new features to its mobile app – allowing passengers to do several tasks from their phones, touch-free – amid the COVID-19 pandemic. This would limit contact with employees or surfaces.

“With hygiene and safety concerns top of mind, Alaska Airlines is making it easier for guests to travel touch-free. Through improved technology and innovation, Alaska is creating more convenience and less contact among guests and employees during travel,” the airlines said in a press release.

The new touch-free options include being able to pre-order meals. The options also include being able to buy food and beverages on board with a stored credit card. People will also be able to print bag tags without having to touch check-in kiosks.

Fox Business explained that the airline’s app “already lets travelers check in for a flight, generate a boarding pass, change seats and prepay for bags, according to the airline.”

“These advancements help make the travel experience easy and almost entirely touch-free for our guests and are just part of the many ways we’re keeping our guests and employees safe during this time,” said Charu Jain, Alaska Airlines’ senior vice president of merchandising and innovation.

The app may also be used to check flight status, gate changes, and boarding notifications.
