  • The principle of Travelers Rest High School in South Carolina banned the American flag from football games because the opposing high school “has a large Hispanic community.”
  • He sighted safety reason for doing so and stated that he didn’t want the flag being used as a taunt.

  • On Monday, amid community backlash, he reversed his decision.

The principle of Travelers Rest High School in South Carolina banned the American flag from last Friday’s football game because the opposing high school “has a large Hispanic community.”

Evidently, Principal Lou Lavely thought that the Hispanic community would take the symbol of the American flag as a taunt that would stir up unneeded tension.

“Any decision to not allow the American flag to be used in an improper ‘taunting,’ unsportsmanlike manner is first and foremost in the interests of promoting the safety and well-being of all in attendance at school events,” Lavely wrote.

“This decision would be made anytime that the American flag, or any other symbol, sign, cheer, or action on the part of our fans would potentially compromise the safety of all in attendance at a school event.”See

The school went as far as to bar entry to the football game to anyone trying to bring in an American flag. One outraged member of the community took to Facebook.

“Last night I picked my brother up from the TRHS Football game and he told me that Lavely had denied entry to a couple of young men with Americans flag (sic). … As I took the flag and attempted to enter myself [a police officer] stated, ‘he has the authority to tell anyone they can’t bring it on the property.’ … I’m sick of this political correctness. We need to do something about it because it’s not getting any better.”

After a community meeting on Monday, Principal Lavely reversed his decision and will now allow flags to be flown at future games.
