The majority of Americans believe that repealing Title 42 will increase illegal border crossings, according to a recent poll conducted by The Economist/YouGov.

“Title 42 is set to end on May 11, when the national public health emergency over COVID-19 lapses. When Title 42 ends, do you think the number of people trying to enter the United States illegally will increase, decrease, or stay the same?” the poll, conducted days prior to Title 42’s expiration, asked.

There appears to be agreement, as 61 percent believe illegal immigration will grow at least “a little,” 43 percent believe it will increase “a lot,” 18 percent believe it will “stay the same,” and six percent believe it will drop at least “a little.”

There is also a bipartisan agreement, with 54 percent of Democrats, 72 percent of Republicans, and 58 percent of independents expecting an increase in the number of persons seeking to enter the United States illegally. Even 57 percent of Biden 2020 voters feel that the expiry of Title 42 will cause a rise in illegal immigration.

The study also indicated that the majority, 51 percent, support Congress enacting legislation that would enable U.S. Border Patrol personnel will “deport migrants without a court hearing when there is no public health justification.”

Three-quarters of Republicans, 76 percent of independents, 46 percent of Democrats, and three-quarters of Republicans approve such legislation.

The poll, which was conducted among 1,500 adult residents in the United States from May 6 to 9, 2023, comes as Title 42 comes to an end this week.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas stated that he is “not worried” about the ramifications of Title 42 expiration and believes the southern border is safe.

“Our border is secure,” he said, talking to NBC Nightly News.

“The border is secure because we are maximizing our resources to deliver the most effective results to our border with the most extraordinary workforce in the world,” he went on to say.

According to Breitbart News, the Trump administration's strategy, which required border authorities to promptly deport border crossers due to public health concerns, has resulted in the removal of about 2.5 million illegal border crossers to far. Yet, with the expiry of Title 42, the United States might see up to 390,000 illegal migrants at the border each month, according to DHS projections (DHS).

Since President Biden took office in early 2021, almost 5 million illegal aliens have crossed the border.
