Democrats at the Senate have admitted defeat in the efforts to include amnesty for illegal aliens into a forthcoming budget reconciliation package.
Currently, Republicans and Democrats in the Senate are negotiating a reconciliation package, which is a budget that’s filibuster-proof and that can be approved just with majority support. In the midst of this, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) revealed that the amnesty would not be included in the final deal.
“Asked if immigration is at all part of reconciliation talks, [Sen. Durbin] responds with a clear and unequivocal ‘no,’” wrote Sahil Kapur of NBC on Twitter on Tuesday.
This seeming admission of defeat follows the Senate Democrats’ repeated failure last year to include amnesty into a similar package.
In June, Durbin revealed that he and Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) discussed the amnesty deal. According to Tillis, those discussions are still ongoing.
