Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and his family escaped harm after an arsonist broke into the Pennsylvania governor’s residence early Sunday morning and started multiple fires. The attack has raised significant concerns over security protocols at Shapiro’s official residence.

State police say the suspect, 38-year-old Cody Balmer of Harrisburg, used a hammer to break into the mansion around 2:00 a.m. Balmer reportedly threw incendiary devices into several rooms of the 29,000-square-foot building while Governor Shapiro, his wife Lori, their four children, and guests were asleep inside.

Security Breach and Emergency Response

According to Pennsylvania State Police, Balmer scaled the property’s perimeter fence and used tools to break windows. He ignited at least two fires before fleeing the scene undetected.

State troopers assigned to the Pennsylvania governor’s detail were able to alert the family and assist in their evacuation. Firefighters arrived quickly and extinguished the flames before the fire could spread throughout the entire mansion.

The Pennsylvania governor’s mansion suffered substantial damage in the dining and piano rooms. Photos released by the state government show extensive soot damage, shattered windows, and burnt furniture from the arson attack.

Suspect Facing Severe Charges

Balmer was arrested later Sunday after confessing to a former partner and turning himself in to police. He now faces multiple felony charges, including attempted murder, aggravated arson, burglary, and terrorism.

Court records show Balmer has prior convictions for theft and forgery. He was already scheduled to appear in court later this week for a separate assault case.

Authorities have not disclosed a clear motive. However, Balmer allegedly told investigators that he would have assaulted the Pennsylvania governor if they had come face to face during the attack.

The FBI is assisting in the investigation alongside Pennsylvania State Police. Officials confirmed that a comprehensive review of executive residence security procedures is underway.

Pennsylvania Governor’s Response to the Attack

Governor Shapiro addressed the media hours after the attack, condemning political violence and affirming his commitment to serving Pennsylvania.

“This was a targeted act, and while my family and I are grateful to be safe, this incident highlights the unacceptable level of vitriol we face today,” Shapiro said.

The Pennsylvania governor hosted a Passover dinner at the mansion just hours before the attack, which added to concerns that the arson could have been motivated by anti-Semitism or political extremism.

Governor Shapiro also made clear that he would not allow acts of violence to intimidate him or his family. “We will continue to celebrate our faith and do our work without fear,” he said.

Political Violence Raises New Questions

The arson attack on the Pennsylvania governor comes amid a troubling national trend of increasing violence against elected officials. In recent years, multiple state and federal leaders have been targeted, including former President Donald Trump and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer. This latest incident in Pennsylvania has renewed calls for stronger security measures at government residences across the country.

The Pennsylvania governor’s mansion, completed in 1968, is located along the Susquehanna River and has served as the official residence for eight governors. Tours of the residence have been suspended pending repairs and further security assessments.

State police officials say they will evaluate how an intruder managed to breach security and carry out the attack despite on-site personnel.

Governor Shapiro ended his remarks by thanking law enforcement and first responders for their quick action. He also expressed confidence that the state will learn from this incident and implement the necessary changes.
