Vice President Joseph R. Biden says former President Bill Clinton’s past “shouldn’t matter” in the context of the 2016 campaign, saying Mr. Clinton “paid a price” in getting impeached by the U.S. House over the Monica Lewinsky scandal.
“No, it shouldn’t matter,” Mr. Biden said in an excerpt of an interview to air on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday.
“Look, I can’t make any excuses for Bill Clinton’s conduct, and I wouldn’t attempt to make any excuses for the conduct,” he said.
“But he paid a price for it. He paid a price. He was impeached,” Mr. Biden said, referring to the impeachment resulting from Mr. Clinton’s relationship with Ms. Lewinsky, the former White House intern.
“He expressed his deep sorrow and acknowledged what he did,” Mr. Biden said.
Campaigning for Hillary Clinton recently, Mr. Biden has hammered Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump over recently-unearthed 2005 comments in which Mr. Trump talks about using his “star” status to force himself onto women.
Mr. Biden said in Nevada Thursday that Mr. Trump’s comments constitute “the textbook definition of sexual assault.”
Mr. Trump has apologized for what he called “locker room” talk and said he never actually acted out the lewd acts he described. He’s also vehemently denied allegations from a number of women in recent days that he did grope or touch them inappropriately a number of years ago.
