According to Joe Biden, he will choose a woman as a running mate if he wins the Democratic presidential nomination. He committed to picking a female running mate during the Democratic primary debate on Sunday.
“I would pick a woman to be my vice president,” Biden said, as he also committed to appointing the first black woman to the Supreme Court. “My running mate will be a woman. #DemDebate,” said his tweet.

Fox News reported that before the debate, “Biden had said that he would consider choosing a woman to serve as the vice presidential nominee.”
His rival for the nomination, Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, would not give a firm commitment to naming a female as his vice presidential nominee. When asked if he would also choose a woman as a running mate, Sanders said: “In all likelihood, I will.”
The Guardian explains that it has been more than 35 years since the last time a woman was the running mate on a Democratic presidential ticket. “It was 1984 when New York congresswoman Geraldine Ferraro ran alongside Minnesota senator Walter Mondale, who lost to incumbent Ronald Reagan in a landslide,” said the report.
While Hawaii congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard remains in the race, there is a very low chance for her to win the nomination.
