Biden Moves Forward with Harriet Tubman on $20 Bill
President Joe Biden has decided to push a plan to put the face of abolitionist Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill. The Obama administration originally announced this plan five years ago. However, former President Donald Trump’s administration stalled the process.
Regarding the plan, “The Treasury Department is taking steps to resume efforts to put Harriet Tubman on the front of the new $20 notes,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki announced. Psaki also mentioned the importance of how the nation’s money should reflect the country’s history and show how diverse the country is. According to her, “Harriet Tubman’s image gracing the new $20 note would certainly reflect that.”
The plan was first revealed in 2016, during the Obama administration. Tubman would take the place of former President Andrew Jackson on the $20 notes. However, in 2019, the Trump administration said this change would be postponed until 2018, citing technical issues. According to Psaki, however, the White House is trying to find steps that would “speed up that effort.”
If this plan pushes through, Tubman would become the first African American person on the country’s currency. The initial decision to push for this change was made after the Obama administration performed a 10-month review, during which, it asked the public for suggestions on who should be on the redesigned $20 bill.
