House GOP: Biden Should Resign Over Afghanistan Mess

The House of Representatives Freedom Caucus said that President Joe Biden should resign. The President must go after botching the evacuation of US forces and civilians from Kabul. This left many US troops dead and stranded hundreds of Americans in Afghanistan.

Biden Should Resign

The President decided to fully withdraw from Afghanistan by August 31 after a 20-year military presence in the country. During the evacuation phase, a suicide bomber managed to claim the lives of 13 US troops and 170 Afghans.

Despite the setback, Biden stuck with the August 31 timetable. Consequently, the last US military flight left Kabul Monday night, less than a day before the deadline. Left behind in Afghanistan were around 250 Americans who had no access to the airport. 

As a result of the disastrous evacuation, House Republicans said that Biden should resign and own up to his shortcomings. In addition, Representative Mike Gallagher (R-WI) filed a bill to address the unresolved issues in Afghanistan.  

Gallagher Files Bill, Democrats Reject It

Gallagher’s bill, filed Monday, demanded the administration to further act on continuing the evacuation and limiting the Taliban. It contains five measures.

First, the bill demands that the Biden administration produce a plan to bring stranded Americans home. Second, Gallagher’s bill will request a full accounting of all equipment the US left behind.

Third, the bill requires transparency on any agreements with the Taliban. Fourth, establish that Congress will not recognize the Taliban as the official government of Afghanistan. Finally, the bill aims to ban funding or relief efforts to the Taliban. 

However, during a floor vote Tuesday, House Democrats managed to block the legislation. Gallagher expressed his frustration in not getting the support his legislation needed.

“House Democrats have had not one, but two opportunities to join House Republicans in supporting legislation to hold this administration accountable and do whatever is necessary to save lives.

Both times, they declined to join our efforts to do so. This is unacceptable,” he said. “American lives are on the line and we have a moral obligation to do everything we can to get them home. Congress cannot sit on the sidelines while hundreds of our fellow citizens have been left behind enemy lines,” he added. 

House Republicans Blast Democrat Partisanship

Meanwhile, the House Republican leadership blasted Democrats for their display of partisanship. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) asked what the administration is doing about the Americans left behind.

“What is the plan to bring Americans home safely? Not some, but every single American? What about the list of the weaponry that has been left behind, accounting for that? We now have Americans stuck in Afghanistan, the Taliban in charge with more weaponry than they've ever had in the past, and a border that is open,” he added. 

In addition, Gallagher called out Democrats for their apathy. He found it ironic that his bill is exactly what the Democrats publicly asked for.  “This is exactly what many Democrats said they wanted.

They pushed back on the administration. They begged and pleaded the president to abandon the Taliban's surrender date,” he said. “But when the moment of truth came on the House floor, they all voted against it so as not to jeopardize the passage of Bernie Sanders' budget,” he added. 

Pelosi Missing During the Proceedings

Aside from saying that Biden should resign, Republicans also called out House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) for being absent during the vote.

She was also missing in action when the House called for a moment of silence for the 13 fallen service members. “Where is Nancy Pelosi?” Representative Jim Banks (R-IN) asked. “Why isn't she here? Each and every one of us changed our plans so that we could be here today.”

In addition to Biden, the conservative Freedom Caucus also formally called for the resignation of  Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin.

They want all three to resign due to an “overwhelming failure” of leadership.  “Mr. President, if you have an ounce of respect for your 50 years of service to this nation, and to move forward toward healing, to unite our nation, to get past this nightmare that you've created, then by God, man, resign,” said Representative Clay Higgins (R-LA).
