Biden Uses Address to Congress to Continue His Gun Control Crusade

President Joe Biden has pushed for gun control for years. Therefore, no one felt surprised that he continues lobbying for it after becoming president.

This fact was evident when he delivered his address to Congress.

When Biden was on the campaign trail, he put his gun control credentials front and center during the Democratic primary. He didn't focus on it too much as the general election went on. However, his topic remained a mainstay on his website.

Biden revealed that he did not intend to “become confrontational” in his address. However, he also mentioned that more Republicans should join Democrats in improving the background checks for buying guns.

The president reiterated his calls to Congress for the passage of measures that would expand background checks for anyone who wants to purchase guns.

Apart from this, the president also called on Congress to reinstate the ban on “assault” weapons and magazines that have high capacity.

This is nothing new from Biden, but some gun safety advocates claim that the president’s decision to speak about gun safety signals to the members of Congress that they have the responsibility to break the stalemate. He also reiterated that under him, the White House’s top priority is the prevention of gun violence in the country.
