President Joe Biden wants to go to war with Governors Abbott and DeSantis. In a speech Thursday, he threatened to use his presidential powers to overrule the governors of Texas and Florida over their dealings with COVID-19.

Biden Attacks Abbott and DeSantis, Plus Other Republican Officials

Last Thursday, Biden condemned Governors Greg Abbott (R-TX), Ron DeSantis (R-FL), and other Republican governors for their COVID-19 responses. He also called out unvaccinated Americans for dragging the pandemic too long.

During his Thursday speech at the White House, Biden spoke out against those he thought were impeding the progress versus the pandemic. “This is a pandemic of the unvaccinated.

And it's caused by the fact that despite America having [an] unprecedented and successful vaccination program, despite the fact that for almost five months, free vaccines have been available in more than 80,000 different locations, we still have nearly 80 million Americans who have failed to get the shot.”

Biden Called Out Abbott and DeSantis, Will ‘Get Them Out Of The Way’

Afterward, Biden then went after the governors who he thinks are not doing enough. “And to make matters worse, there are elected officials actively working to undermine the fight against COVID-19,” he said, referring to Abbot and DeSantis.

“Instead of encouraging people to get vaccinated and mask up, they’re ordering mobile morgues for the unvaccinated dying from COVID in their communities,” he added.

“Right now, local school officials are trying to keep children safe in a pandemic while their governor picks a fight with them and even threatens their salaries or their jobs.

Talk about bullying in schools,” Biden remarked, an obvious dig at Florida’s DeSantis. “If they’ll not help, if these governors won’t help us beat the pandemic, I’ll use my power as president to get them out of the way,” he added.

Abbott and DeSantis

Abbott and DeSantis ended up at the President’s crosshairs due to their handling of COVID-19 in their states. In particular, DeSantis insisted on keeping masks optional in Florida’s schools.

He recently filed an emergency appeal after a circuit court judge ruled that schools can impose mask mandates. Earlier, 13 school boards in Florida districts voted to require masks in defiance of the governor's order. DeSantis responded to the defiance by threatening to withhold their salaries.

Meanwhile in Texas, Abbott also issued an executive order banning schools from imposing mask mandates. He left the choice of wearing masks to individuals.

Both governors’ offices dismissed Biden’s rants. DeSantis said he has no intention of responding to Biden’s speech, saying he has no time for “petty food fights” as he’s busy.

However, Abbott tweeted that “Biden’s vaccine mandate is an assault on private businesses. I issued an Executive Order protecting Texans’ right to choose whether they get the COVID vaccine & added it to the special session agenda. Texas is already working to halt this power grab.”

Other Republicans Call Out Biden’s Call for Vaccine Mandates

In addition to Abbott and DeSantis, other Republicans also called out Biden’s planned vaccine mandates for companies with over 100 workers. GOP Lawmakers vowed to block the new policy.

Representative Thomas Massie (R-KY) simply tweeted: “This is absolutely unconstitutional,” which Representative Neal Dunn (R-FL) agreed with. Dunn said the answer doesn’t lie with mandates. “Getting the vaccine should be up to you and your doctor — not the federal government,” he added.

Meanwhile, Representative Lauren Boebert (R-CO) also called out Biden’s plan. “All 9 million federal employees should consult with their doctor and make a personal, informed decision about taking the vaccine. Instead, Sleepy Joe says to take it or else… You don’t lead by coercion. Biden has failed as a leader in every way,” she said.
